Our EWG Horticulture Class just started planting the hanging baskets and seeded the herbs to get them ready for our Annual Plant Sale in May. It feels like Spring!

This Saturday, March 11, 2023, the EWG HS Band will be partaking in a very rare experience: EWG is one of four schools from New England (2 from RI, 1 from ME, and 1 from NH) chosen to participate in a clinic with the United States Coast Guard Band. While nationally there are many US military music groups, there are only 5 groups considered to be "Presidential" ensembles, and the Coast Guard Band in New London is one of those esteemed groups. This is equivalent to working with an MLB, NBA, or NFL team! The Rhode Island Art Education Association Anchor Award results are in; nine EWG artists were among the winners! From the Junior High, the winners are: Olivia Legault, Anchor Award, Best in the category- Drawing Ady Kocab, Anchor Award- Mixed Media and Wave Award- Self Portrait Leah Lincoln, Anchor Award- Painting Zoltan Libertini, Wave Award- Abstract/Experimental From the Senior High, the winners are: Sydney Daigle, Anchor Award- Painting Kailey Brooks, Anchor Award, Best in Category- Painting and Wave Award- Self Portrait Fiona Brand, Anchor Award- Photography William Kuprevich, Wave Award- Abstract/Experimental Lydia Geuss, Wave Award- Social Justice We are so proud of these hardworking artists and grateful the support they received in cultivating some of the ideas and perspectives reflected in their award-winning artwork! The attached flyer has information about the exhibition and award ceremony at RIC this Saturday if anyone is interested in attending.

EWG students had the opportunity to tour France and live with French families in an international exchange, from February 22nd to March 3rd. The toured the Louvre, Versailles, and Centre Pompidou. They’ve walked more than five miles a day many days and taken every type of public transportation available. They’ve visited the medieval cities of Rennes and St. Malo. They've been to the top of the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, just to name a few! They visited the landing sites at Normandy and toured the American cemetery. A student put a flag on the grave of a fallen RI soldier whose family had never gotten to visit the cemetery. They learned to live with another family in a foreign country and have gotten to learn firsthand about life in a place that is very different from home.

Five young women from the EWG - FFA chapter attended the Women in Agriculture Conference at the Crown Plaza on March 7. Olivia Hathaway, Hailey McCoombs, Ms. Gwynne Millar, Advisor, Madison Rathbun, Clare Titus, and Rebecca Kilday learned about opportunities in agriculture for women. This educational event is designed to share options available to women currently in farming and women considering farming as a career. Students also got to network with agricultural organizations and professionals and hear from people who have successfully started agricultural operations in RI. The goal of the conference is to ensure that the next generation of women is educated, encouraged, and empowered to take on the challenges of meeting the world's growing food, fuel, and fiber needs.

25 - EWG FFA members attended the Basic Leadership Training Conference on February 3rd. Nice to see the chapter back in action! Clare Titus and Olivia Hathaway also competed in the FFA Creed Speaking Career Development, a competition open to first-year members. If either win, they will represent RI at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN, next November.

EWG Garden Club students from 8th grade to 12th have been working really hard this year. We measured and designed the area near the greenhouse and students began creating pathways, raised bed gardens with arbors, and a water feature. In addition, they built birdhouses to increase the biodiversity in the surrounding area. We have been currently building cold-frame tops to some of the raised bed gardens so that we can grow out winter crops like spinach, carrots, beets and more. The students are still working on their mini coldframe tops and they are coming along nicely. We can't wait to see what environmental sustainable project they will design and build next!

Floriculture class is learning how to make floral crowns in our floriculture wedding unit. Floral crowns were common in ancient Greece during special events and are still worn today. They have been used as a symbol for honoring achievements and respect. During the Victorian Era and in Ukraine they have been used in wedding ceremonies. Throughout history and around the world they have been a symbol of love and celebration. It is fun to watch the students learn how to create and personalize their live floral crowns. They took a few times to make, but they have been learning to master the techniques and they are coming out nice!

Congratulations to the following EWG Music Students, who were accepted to the Rhode Island Music Education Association (RIMEA) All State Music Program: Devon Cranston, Sr. Division Band, Baritone Saxophone (placed third in the state!) Kaitlyn DePietro, Sr. Division Band, French Horn Damon Durfee, Sr. Division Orchestra, Violin Adalyn Fink, Jr. Division Orchestra, Violin Genevieve Armitage, Jr. Division Jazz Ensemble, Trumpet Kaylee Morissette, Jr. Division Mixed Chorus, Alto Graeme Griffiths, Jr. Division Mixed Chorus, Bass These students had to audition for the honor, and after receiving high enough scores, were named to these groups. Students are assessed on a prepared piece of music, scales, sight-reading (the ability to read music they've never seen before). The All State groups meet in March 2023, and will rehearse and then perform a program of music chosen by their guest conductor. If you see them, be sure to congratulate them!

Art Loft Gallery open 12/22 from 6-7 pm before the high school chorus concert.

Mrs. Settipane’s culinary class participated in a Gingerbread House contest at the Ocean House in Westerly, RI and won Best School Overall, beating 3 other high schools. 15 students participated the winning houses, Peppermint Falls and Beavertail Lighthouse. They have been working since October starting with a unique design creation, baking, construction and decorating. The houses are on display in the HS Art Loft until Thursday, Dec. 22nd.

We will be offering two new Career & Tech programs starting in September: Biomedical Science and Child Development! Reach out to the school counseling office if you would like to learn more about either (or any of our CTE programs).

Seniors Fiona Brand and Jessica Bross are holding a Book Drive from Dec 19- Dec 22 as part of their senior Capstone project. They will use the donated books to create a free library within the community. Books can be brought to the SHS: there will be a box in the foyer and a box in the reception area. All books are welcome!

The EWG FFA chapter participated in the statewide holiday design competition at Chariho High School on December 14. Top category prizes went to Olivia Hathaway for her wreath and Mady Burgess for her centerpiece.
